MICHELANGELO PISTOLETTO

Dalla Cittadellarte allo Statodellarte

THE EXHIBITION

From February 3 to June 3, 2026, Palazzo Boncompagni hosts the exhibition “Michelangelo Pistoletto. From Cittadellarte to Statodellarte,” curated by Silvia Evangelisti.

This title describes a journey that encompasses historical works and projects spanning over sixty years of the artist’s research focused on the relationship between art, society, and politics.

Michelangelo Pistoletto

The project is part of the relationship established between Pistoletto and Palazzo Boncompagni in 2021 with the exhibition Gregorio XIII e Michelangelo Pistoletto. Dal Rinascimento alla rinascita, which marked the opening of the Palace to the city and to a program dedicated to contemporary art.

With this exhibition, Palazzo Boncompagni is hosting not only a retrospective of works, but also an active device that connects art, the public, and contemporary debate through a program that will continue for the entire duration of the exhibition.

Tavolo love difference sala del papa

The heart of the project is the return to Bologna, after twenty years, of the Tavolo Love Difference (Love Difference Table), located in the Sala del Papa. The work is the symbol of the Love Difference movement – Artistic Movement for an InterMediterranean Policy, founded by Pistoletto in 2002 and presented at the Venice Biennale in 2003, when the artist received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.

It is a large mirrored table shaped like the Mediterranean basin, surrounded by chairs from the countries bordering this sea, around which many of the activities of Love Difference and Cittadellarte have developed over time.

Venere degli stracci

The exhibition features a selection of works that create tension between classicism and contemporaneity, including: Venere degli stracci (1966), works dedicated to artificial intelligence, and a large, previously unseen mirrored painting depicting a female figure raising the symbol of the Third Paradise, a work that Palazzo Boncompagni has housed permanently for years and which forms the theoretical core of the entire project.

During the exhibition, the table will be the focus of a Public Program curated by Chiara Belliti: Conversations around the Love Difference table. The series of meetings includes three events, each structured as a round table discussion dedicated to the state of the art in specific areas of reflection: “Art, Spirituality, and Religion” (February 10, 6:00 p.m.), “Ethics, politics, and artificial intelligence,” and “Sustainable fashion as a cultural and social responsibility,” dedicated to the relationship between creativity, economics, and the environment.
