THE PALACE • ART AND ARCHITECTURE

Helical staircase

The spiral staircase leading to the noble floor of the building is also attributed to Jacopo Barrozzi, known as Vignola. It was inspired by the noble models of Bramante in the Vatican, that of Vignola’s Palazzo Farnese di Caprarola and is in all respects similar to that of Palazzo Barozzi.

The staircase ends at the top with a roof terrace from which you can see the two towers of Bologna.
A mother-of-pearl marmorino has recently been unearthed on the wall of the spiral staircase, making it look similar to the inside of a shell; a recurring motif throughout the building.
