🎟 10 euro palazzo + mostra, 5 euro solo mostra

-🇬🇧-

There is a work at Palazzo Boncompagni that speaks of peace.

It is Michelangelo Pistoletto’s Third Paradise, a piece that Cittadellarte, the artist’s foundation, regards as a symbol of “preventive peace”: the kind built before conflicts arise by recognizing differences as an opportunity for collaboration.

It consists of three circles derived from the mathematical infinity symbol: the two outer circles represent nature and the artificial, while the central one is the meeting point; what Pistoletto calls the womb of rebirth. It is a formula that would have been marked in red ink at school: 1+1=3.

On Wednesday 7th October, we will revisit this topic with the presentation of the catalogue for “Michelangelo Pistoletto: From Cittadellarte to Statodellarte”, the exhibition that, between February and July, occupied the loggia, the rooms surrounding the Sala del Papa and the Boncompagnina.

-🇬🇧-

There is a question almost every visitor asks upon reaching the end of the tour: how did you come up with this idea?

The answer is that this palazzo has been home to contemporary art for twenty years. Artists like Pistoletto, Marini, Paladino, Mondino and Pirri have all passed through these halls. The initial feeling is always the same; something modern that seems out of place amidst the frescoes and yet ten minutes later, that impression is completely reversed.

The sixteenth century was not a cautious era. The grottesche on the ceilings blend real and imaginary animals with a taste for the hybrid that we would call experimental even today. Placing ten motorcycles in the mix is more consistent than it might seem.

Runs until October 5th.

If you have already visited, tell us about your first reaction upon entering.

"Protecting Heritage: Renew, Resist, Reinvent" is the theme of the 2026 European Heritage Days. For Palazzo Boncompagni, these three words translate into very tangible realities: ongoing restoration work, archives that continue to reveal pieces of history and a constant openness to the contemporary world—exemplified by ten motorcycles from the Ducati "Collection 100" currently on display beneath the grotesque frescoes until October 5th.

On September 26th and 27th we will share this experience in person through guided tours of the Palazzo and the exhibition.

📍 Via del Monte 8, Bologna
🎟️ Palazzo + exhibition: €10; exhibition only: €5; free for children under 10 and visitors with disabilities.
Admission is by guided tour and reservation only; there are three evening time slots and space is limited.

Ducati is at Palazzo Boncompagni until October 5th!
Only one hundred units of each model exist worldwide. That is how the “100 Collection” was born: ten bikes from the current lineup sporting the liveries of the Ducatis that defined the century—the colors of iconic motorcycles applied to contemporary frames.

Some of these bikes are here in Bologna, set amidst 16th-century frescoes and painted ceilings, alongside works by Ugo Nespolo dedicated to the Ducati universe. This forms the “Identity” chapter of the city-wide centenary exhibition.

There are two ways to visit:
🎟 Palazzo + exhibition: €10. Includes a 45-minute guided tour in small groups.
🎟 Exhibition only: €5.
In both cases, entry is by reservation only and spots per time slot are limited.

Back to school!

📌 Infanzia. Angela Marescalchi, la madre del futuro papa, accompagna i bambini nelle sale in abiti d’epoca e racconta la casa come se ci vivesse ancora.

📌 Primaria.

For about a decade in the late 16th century, Rome was, in large part, a Bolognese construction site.

Ugo Boncompagni became Pope in 1572 and, in his wake, an entire city descended upon the capital—bringing with it cardinal-nephews and the architects who worked for them.
Vignola died the following year. His legacy was succeeded by Ottaviano Mascarino—a fellow Bolognese—who designed the initial layout of the Quirinale, while construction projects for new noble families sprang up all around, following the Jubilee of 1575.
The very same school of architects that designed the staircase in this palazzo found themselves working on the papal residence.

Daniele Pascale Guidotti Magnani, a researcher at the University of Bologna’s Department of Architecture, discusses this topic.

📅 Thursday 17th September at 18:00.
📍 Free admission with reservation; seating is limited to the capacity of a 16th-century hall.

📍 Galleria Cavour 1959, via Massei 1, Bologna

💯Ducati turns one hundred and recounts its history in a multi-venue exhibition: five chapters in five locations across Bologna. Two of them are ours, just a few minutes’ walk from each other.

At Galleria Cavour 1959, the Design chapter: how the shape of a Ducati is born, from the first sketch to the resulting motorcycle.

At Palazzo Boncompagni, the Identity chapter, built around the 100 Collection: ten models from the current range, each produced in one hundred units, bearing the liveries of the motorcycles that have made Ducati history.

In the palace, a selection of the Collection, along with the works that Ugo Nespolo dedicated to it.

The red of Borgo Panigale beneath the grotesques, in a palace that has already changed the rules once.

📅 From September 4th to October 5th 2026

📍 Galleria Cavour 1959, Via Massei 1, Bologna

🐶 Today is World Dog Day and, at Palazzo Boncompagni, it concerns us more than you might think!

Small dogs are welcome on our guided tours. They must be kept on a short leash, well-behaved and have a bit of flexibility: if anyone in the group has allergies, we might ask for a little extra patience.

Did you know that a dog is hiding among the stucco in the Pope’s Hall?
It’s not an addition designed for social media: it’s been there for centuries and, on the first visit, almost no one notices it.

From September, we’ll be waiting for you at the Palazzo, even with your four-legged friend.

There’s a ceiling in Palazzo Boncompagni with dragons, animals and figures halfway between plants and humans that have been watching passersby for five hundred years.

They were conceived by someone familiar with the work of Ulisse Aldrovandi, a Bolognese naturalist and cousin of Ugo Boncompagni, the pope we take for granted every time we look at a calendar. They’re called grotesques.

Aldrovandi spent his life cataloging everything that existed in nature: plants, animals, fossils and even what wasn’t nature but seemed to be. Something of that hunger to classify the world remains on this ceiling, where the boundary between reality and fantasy is purposely blurred.

Visits resume in September. The Pope’s Hall awaits you.
